Five Essential Foods for College Students

by Rick Burgess

College students are always short on time and short on money. College students who live off-campus have the additional challenge of trying to cook fast, economical, nutritional and convenient meals. A tall order, for sure. Here are five foods that all college students should have in their kitchens.

The first one is pasta, which is a staple in virtually every American kitchen. Pasta can be eaten with practically nothing on top of it, or can easily be dressed to the hilt for an elaborate meal. Dressed up or dressed down, pasta is a favorite. And it cooks as quickly, and easily, as boiling water.

Eggs are a perfect food for college students. Eggs can be eaten them scrambled or fried, but you can do a lot more that that with an egg. Serve them with sauteed vegetables, cheese, meats, breads and so much more. Eggs are so much more than just a breakfast food.

Another great food for a college kitchen is potatoes. Potatoes cook easily, and quickly, in a microwave. They are starch that tastes good with almost any protein. Potato salad, the classic barbecue fare, with the addition of some hard-boiled egg, or diced ham and peas can be a meal all by itself. A potato topped with some tomato sauce and cheese is another easy vegetarian meal.

Onions are the next food on the list. Although you usually don't eat onions alone, they should be in all kitchens - no less the kitchen of a college student. Eat them raw in a salad or on a sandwich, or cooked a variety of ways, as an ingredient in a countless number of meals. Onions have nutritional value and are said to have anti-cancer agents. Onions can add a little excitement to an otherwise bland dish.

Canned tomatoes, or tomato sauce, should also be in all off-campus kitchens. You can eat them right out of the can, plain and heated, or mixed with other foods in a variety, of ways such as soups and stews. Who doesn't love a red sauce?

There are so many ways to use the foods on this list. Eat these foods in combination with each other or in combination with some of your other favorite foods. These foods are nutritious, delicious and budget friendly.
